Stuart was diagnosed with Late-Onset Pompe Disease in 2025 at the age of 56 and lives in London. Looking back, he can recognise symptoms that were probably related to Pompe, but it was only following an MRI in 2024 that the possibility of a serious underlying condition became apparent.

Before his diagnosis, he enjoyed a varied career with the British Police. He retired from the Police in 2018 as a Detective Superintendent. He later spent several years as Security Director in the private sector and continues to undertake occasional consultancy work.

Cycling has always been a major part of his life. After leaving the Police, he travelled from Colombia to Patagonia on a fully laden touring bicycle, covering around 10,000 km. He is fortunate to still enjoy cycle touring, although he now plans his routes more carefully around the effects of Pompe disease and his infusion schedule.

Although his diagnosis came as a shock, he has been greatly encouraged by the support, knowledge and sense of community within the Pompe community. The Pompe Support Network has been an invaluable source of information and connection, and he feels honoured to have the opportunity to contribute as a Trustee.
