Rare disease communities will be pleased to see that NHS England are planning to provide financial support to reduce delays in making drugs available for rare and genetic diseases, the funding matches that provided by the Cancer Drugs Fund (CDF).

NHS England will be launching a consultation ‘in the next few weeks’ to finalise details, the announcement today only confirms that the size of the IMF will be £340m. ‘The finalised fund will be subject to a formal public consultation in the next few weeks which will involve patient groups, pharmaceutical companies and other stakeholders.’

The announcement indicates that the IMF will, “provide treatments like cutting-edge gene therapies that could offer life-saving benefits and particularly help those with less common diseases where data collection on medicines effectiveness take longer to obtain due to the smaller patient cohort”.
